Lyme Disease Awareness
In this podcast we explore Lyme disease, its prevalence and presentations. Lyme disease symptoms may be non-specific and difficult to recognise. Raising awareness amongst primary care clinicians will increase the likelihood of patients receiving early and effective treatment.
Dr Camilla Janssen talks to infectious disease and microbiology consultant, Matthew Dryden, from the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL), Porton Down.
Matthew explains:
- Lyme presentation and manifestation - thinking about the three stages of Lyme disease
- early localized phase
- early disseminated phase (Neuro dissemination / radiculopathy)
- late stage Lyme disease.
- what tests and treatment may be appropriate including asymptomatic prophylaxis following a tick bite.
- A look at serology and interpretation in the context of the clinical setting.
- Chronic fatigue triggered by Lyme disease
The RCGP have produced this user friendly Lyme Disease Toolkit for medical professionals and patients.
